Trillium Artisans
PORTLAND, OR, Feb. 14, 2004 (Trillium) - During the past four years, the community of Trillium Artisans has worked to articulate and practice what it means to take a sustainable approach to business. We operate with a triple bottom line, meaning, we equally value People, Planet and Profit. The People of Trillium Artisans build community and celebrate their creativity by working collectively to establish a viable marketing group for small, home based artisan businesses, particularly women-run businesses. We value the health of our Planet by using a minimum of 50% reclaimed or recycled materials in each product we make. We promote Profit for All by using living wage standards for the artisans. http://www.trilliumartisans.org/trillium_artisans_about.htm .

Support for MicroEnterprise
WEBSITE Reference, Aug. 2003 (The Sustainable Village) - “Very small businesses called microenterprises are built on dreams and hard work, but the assistance they need is often in short supply. Nowhere is this more apparent than in parts of the world where equipment, transportation and reliable electricity and telecommunications can be hard to come by. This web site was created to serve as a tool to foster new opportunities for rural entrepreneurs.” http://www.thesustainablevillage.com/servlet/display/microenterprise/.

Building Our Community - Stories

Island Equipment Owners Association
VICTORIA, BC, Feb. 08, 2004 (Quality of Life Challenge) - In 1964 the first meeting of the Island Equipment Owner’s Association was held for local contractors to discuss industry concerns, hoping for improvements for themselves and their employees. They may not have known it, but they started something that would improve our quality of life for decades to come. The focus expanded from representing the excavating industry to filling needs within the community that benefit members and their families, to the community at large. Over the years they have upgraded ball diamonds, created the Beckwith Water Play Park, built the Lambrick Youth Skateboard Park, improved roads, constructed the Victoria General Hospital Healing Garden, redeveloped school fields, and the list keeps going on. The IEOA members donate all their labour and equipment, while they solicit suppliers to donate much-needed materials. Read more ...

LOCAL BATTLES: Hood River Rejects Wal-Mart Supercenter
MINNEAPOLIS, MN, Feb. 2004 (ILSR, Home Town Advantage) - In early January, the Hood River, Oregon, County Commission voted 3-2 to reject Wal-Mart's application to build a 186,000-square-foot supercenter. "This was a marvelous and gutsy decision by the board," said Kate Huseby, co-chair of the Citizens for Responsible Growth (CRG), a grassroots group that has fought the proposal in this community of 5,000 people in north central Oregon for more than two years. "We applaud them for doing their homework, and making the tough vote." Hood River Citizens for Responsible Growth .
