Community Youth Involvement – Nanaimo, Canada / Yichang, China

Canada World Youth
NANAIMO, BC, June 2004 (On August 27, 18 youth (9 from China, 9 from Canada) will be arriving in Nanaimo, and will stay for the next three months. The project is based on the non-formal education model, so we'll be getting involved in the community as much as possible by volunteering with local organizations and community groups. Living in host families is also one of the fundamental pieces of the project; it allows youth to be fully immersed in the culture of the community. Our hope is to introduce them to a new community and empower them to actively participate in the daily life of Nanaimo. Right now one of the main things we have to do is find people who would be interested in hosting the youth while they're here. The mission of our organization is to empower youth to build just and sustainable communities. After our time in Nanaimo we'll head to China and use the same model to live and work in the community of Yichang. One of the most crucial elements of our organization is building global partnerships, and fostering a sense of global citizenship in both the youth and the community involved.
