Community Ownership

Demonstrating Sharing
VICTORIA, BC, Sep.24, (CIPNews Reader Email) - Burnside Gorge Community Association’s Community Chest - For as little as $30, Colleen Kasting keeps poor families living in the Burnside-Gorge area stable. Sometimes the money is used to top-up rent, buy groceries until payday or pay for school supplies. Sometimes the money pays for expensive antibiotics, or family bus passes. But whatever the reason, Kasting, along with the outreach workers working at the Burnside Gorge Community Association and local volunteers, make sure that families living in the area can stay warm, fed and in their homes. And they do it with help of the Association’s Community Chest. "If we can stabilize the families, and keep them in their homes, we can help stabilize the entire community," said Kasting, who helped spearhead the project. Read more.

Local Living Economies / Co-ops

At CCEC, we're dedicated to community economic development!
VANCOUVER, BC, Sep. 2004 (Website Reference, 1995 Article) - CCEC Credit Union received its charter in February 1976 after several years of hard work. The original organizers were active in Vancouver's fledgling self-help movement and they had often lamented the lack of capital available to their enterprises. No financial institution would give them a loan even though their member organizations represented a great deal of money. But once they realized the potential of their collective wealth, the idea of starting a credit union wasn't far behind. http://www.ccec.bc.ca/ccec/about/index.html

Community Building / Youth

Youth Town Halls
ELIST, Sep. 30, 2004 (PIRG-Calgary) - This year Child & Youth Friendly Calgary is holding four Youth Town Halls for the municipal election in Calgary. These town halls are part of the Youth Can Vote Calgary initiative. The town halls (in wards 3, 6, & 13) will allow youth to ask candidates questions and express their concerns. The town halls will be fairly informal, and will not be a debate. We just want to allow youth to learn about the candidates, as well as the candidates learn about what issues are important to youth. You don't have to live in the ward in which the town hall is being held, so everyone is welcome. http://www.calgaryurbanvibe.ca/YCV/students/townhalls/schedule.php
