GMOs / Consumer Rights

Labelling for Health
VANCOUVER, BC, Jan. 19, 2003 (Spud News & thanks to the Left Coast E-newsletter) - SPUD [Small Potatoes Urban Delivery - http://spud.ca ] believes in the consumersí right to know, clear and certified labeling. SPUD is opposed to GMOs for health, environmental, ethical and social reasons. Organically certified products are by definition GMO free, as are products that are clearly marked "GMO free". Regrettably, at this point, itís not possible for anyone (including SPUD) to guarantee the presence/absence of GMOs in other foods, either as major ingredients or as trace amounts unless certified organic or labeled. This is due to weak government regulations, lack of mandatory labeling, inadequate or no testing, the inability of producers and suppliers to trace ingredients, contamination in manufacturing and inadvertent pollination or cross pollination of GMOs. SPUD continues to work on this issue with itís suppliers. Website of the Week - THE RAM'S HORN http://www.ramshorn.bc.ca - A monthly journal of food system analysis.

BC’s Organic Future is in the Soil
NARAMATA, BC, Jan. 22 (COABC) - BC's Organic Future 2004 - COABC AGM and Conference - February 27 - 29, 2004 Naramata Centre. “Healthy soil builds healthy plants” is the motto of organic agriculture. It is also the central theme of BC’s annual organic conference in February. Soil health may be basic, but it is not simple. BC's Organic Future 2004 will bring together producers and experts to discuss such sophisticated techniques as the brewing of compost tea – which is not a soothing beverage served with a twist of lemon, but a modern technique building on the age-old practice of composting. Among the many workshops at the conference will be presentations on other composting issues, soil health, cover crops and "green manures". The conference, to be held at Naramata Centre February 27- 29, 2004 is hosted by the Certified Organic Associations of BC (COABC), and is open to anyone interested in learning more about producing food organically.
