Ecological Agriculture & Society Internship
WEB Reference, Feb. 16, 2005 (EFSWN) - This program combines traditional academics with hands-on work at an urban, organic farm that produces tens of thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables each season for low-income Missoulians. The internship - available for both undergraduate and graduate credit - is offered fall, summer, and spring. Students may farm for a season, a year or longer. The longer you stay, the more responsibility & learning you take on. Students also visit other organic farms & ranches & learn about local food processing and marketing. They learn to help reconnect people to the land through local food. Students bond by sharing work, knowledge, and food they grow and prepare.http://www.gardencityharvest.org/PEAS.htm.

Research Library: People: Food
WEB Reference, Feb. 2005 (Worldwatch Institute) - Worldwatch research on food and agriculture starts from the premise that farming is about more than producing food. Sustainably practiced, agriculture contributes to environmental protection, economic sustainability and rural welfare. Today's dominant farming systems produce in abundance, but they typically deplete soils, poison land and waterways, depend heavily on fossil fuels, and jeopardize the livelihoods of small farmers. The Institute's research stresses the potential of agriculture to serve the public interest by protecting ecosystems, ensuring that no one goes hungry, and providing a stable economic base for rural communities. Future food-related research at Worldwatch will look at ways of making food systems more localized, and at the prospects for urban farming.

What Individuals Can Do
WEB Reference, Feb. 20, 2005 (WorldWatch Institute) - What defines "local" food? Is it food from one's nation? From one's state or province? From farms within 50 kilometers of your house? When ecologist Gary Nabhan decided to eat locally for a year, he drew the line at 400 kilometers from his house, partly guided by the size of the watershed in which he lived. Nutritionist Joan Gussow suggests trying to buy food produced "within a day's leisurely drive of our homes," a goal "designed to maintain a living countryside." Regardless of the precise definition, there are several actions people can take to promote local food systems: http://www.worldwatch.org/features/food/wycd/.
