Self-reliance / Culture and Preservation

The Miichiwaahp (Teepee)
CHIASIBI, Quebec, Feb. 29, 2004 (TDC Website) - The teepee is used for everything, a home, cooking, camping for everyday traveling. It is easy to set up and this can be done very quickly. In the past, when people traveled up the river, they used to put up their teepees along the river on the way to the trap line. The materials needed are readily available from nature like the poles, rocks for the fireplace and spruce boughs for the floor. Canvas covers now take the place of caribou hides which were used in the past. http://www.tdc.ca/secure10/order.htm.

Self-Reliance / Food Security

Raised Bed Gardening
MCDONALDS CORNERS, ON, Feb. 29, 2004 (tdc’s FarmGate) - You want to grow stuff - but don't have the room - How about considering using raised bed gardening in your little backyard area or balcony? Raised bed gardening has gained popularity over the past few years. Smaller backyard gardens and families have led to the down-sizing of planting areas and the amount of produce needed. http://www.tdc.ca/raisedgardens.htm.
