Micro Business Skills Exchange
KARACHI, Sindh, Pakistan, Aug 2004 (Idealist.org) - Social Entrepreneurship is an engine for the alleviation of poverty at grass root level by creating micro business opportunities to generate income and provide new mindset that business is the solution to the employment. To create micro entrepreneurs we need a forum to exchange skills by inducting international volunteers with micro level business experience. We welcome Retired Senior Executives to help us in developing a research center on the subject in Karachi. The center will produce resources for distribution to the social and philanthropic community worldwide in English language. We want to develop the resource center on this subject by covering all media type venues such print, electronic, audio, video and net technology. We invite friends in the other countries in social sector to write to us how they can help us develop this research center for Social Entrepreneurship. They can also register to receive our work and research FREE OF CHARGE for assimilation and spread of this subject in their circle of competence. http://www.idealist.org/en/ip/idealist/SiteIndex/AssetViewer/view?asset=Materials&asset-id=80183%3A56&SID=1bee3b72f8709342790a7a964f34307c

Through this site I have received: a scanner for my computer, a CD burner, a cordless phone, a 2-drawer file cabinet and two vintage "Impeach Nixon" bumper stickers. ALL FOR FREE! I'm telling you about it because the more people that know about it, the more people can get great free stuff. It also helps you to pass your free stuff along to someone else. Enjoy! Coffee, Co-operatives & Competition: The Impact of Fair Trade
E-List, Aug. 17, 2004 (Eldis CSR Reporter) - Author: Millford, A. Produced by: Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI), Norway (2004) - Impact studies looking at the effectiveness of Fair Trade initiatives on increasing the welfare of coffee producers have predominantly shown that the system is working well. This study focuses on the Fair Trade system's use of democratically run coffee cooperatives to reach small scale producers. These institutions often failed under earlier attempts to improve rural livelihoods but are apparently thriving under Fair Trade. By seeing the co-operative as an economic agent acting and interacting in a given market setting, the author derives hypotheses concerning the impact of the Fair Trade premium, through the cooperative, on a local coffee producer market. These hypotheses are then put into a developing country context and applied to a case study from the Chiapas region of Mexico. Available online at: http://www.eldis.org/cf/rdr/rdr.cfm?doc=DOC15412

Stay Local!
WEB Reference, Aug. 2004 (Idealist) - Stay Local! Is a program of the Urban Conservancy. Quite simply, it is a community resource for creating wealth and sustainable prosperity at the local level. This business alliance works in three ways: 1) Educating the people of our city on the importance of shopping at locally owned and managed businesses through presentations, media campaigns, and a variety of other initiatives. 2) Helping local businesses "level the playing field" and grow their customer base, be they retailers, service providers or manufacturers. 3) Challenging leaders at the local and state level to implement new legislation that supports local business. Stay Local! will provide a variety of services to local businesses and will encourage people to shop locally whenever possible. Shoppers will be able to identify local businesses by the Stay Local! logo and will have access to an online database of locally owned and operated businesses, searchable by zip code or neighborhood. This is only the beginning of the program, which has already garnered attention in our local media and through events. For more about the program click here and scroll down or see the Urban Conservancy website at: http://www.urbanconservancy.org Email: info@urbanconservancy.org
