My Journey into Primitive Living
WEB Reference, Feb. 2005 (Hollowtop Outdoor Primitive School) - by Sherene C. Djafroodi - September 22nd - 25th, 2004 - I showed up on Tom Elpel's doorstep after having my first conversation with him only three hours earlier. I just happened to be in Montana and he just happened to be taking some friends on a primitive skills trip the very next day. This is how it works with Tom. He is an author, an environmental activist, and the director of Hollowtop Outdoor Primitive School in Silver Star, Montana--an incredibly busy man who doesn't work within schedules or course outlines, but lives and teaches by the opportunities that present themselves. Tom explains this lifestyle in his book Participating in Nature where he writes, "Primitive living is a model for living that gives us the basic foundations, the very laws of nature, upon which all solutions, in primitive and contemporary living, must be built." In this journal I will share the primitive living skills I learned on a four -day trip into the Pioneer Mountains. More importantly, I will explore the psychology of primitive living, because without understanding the psychology, the skills are merely garage bench hobbies. http://www.hollowtop.com/journals/Sherenes_Journal.htm .

Exemplary Resources / Tracking / Skills

On the Trail of Primitive Skills
VANCOUVER, BC, Feb. 22, 2005 (VTPSC, via BC Primitives Group E-list) - The Vancouver Tracking and Primitive Skills Club is a non-profit group of people from the Lower Mainland of British Columbia who have an interest in learning about nature and the outdoors. More specifically an interest in learning about primitive skills, awareness and tracking. Trackers are people who understand their environment so well that they recognize not only when it has been disturbed but also what causes those disturbances. Trackers are not only experts in trailing animals, but have a knowledge of plants, terrain, animal behaviour, birds and bird language, weather and much much more. Primitive skills are the skills that people around the world used before industry, modern technology and farming to survive on the land. They are skills such as bow making, shelter building, rope weaving and flint knapping to name but a few. These skills teach us about sustainability and ecologically sound living as well as lightening your backpack. http://www.vancouvertrackingclub.ca/.
