Lessons from Sustainable Seattle
PUGET SOUND, WA, Dec. 16, 2003 (by Jennifer Hunting, CIP-SB) - Sustainable Seattle’s (S2) mission statement defines cooperative efforts to achieve a healthier community: “To protect and improve the long-term health and vitality for our region and the world by applying sustainability to the links between economic prosperity, environmental vitality and social equity.” S2 began as a volunteer environmental group sparked by the Global Tomorrow coalition in 1990. Its goal is to face city challenges (urban sprawl, increased consumption and waste, increased resource use, and endangerment of key species in the northwest region) and come up with a mission statement that will make Seattle sustainable.
