The Beer Store was the first Canadian business to be awarded with the Eco Logo - Canada's distinguished Environmental Choice program. Over 2,000 full-time employees work to maintain the system, effectively substituting human capital for the material, energy and waste associated with one-way systems. With the success of the Beer Store's packaging return program, Ontario municipalities save about $31 million in avoided costs associated with collecting the material through municipal waste and recycling programs. The Beer Store also recovers: Aluminum cans, PET containers, plastic bags, stretch wrap, photodegradable tear-away hi-cone plastic rings, office paper, computer paper, corrugated cardboard, and steel (caps). Field Campus Engages Community Members in Environmental Education
PUGET SOUND, WA, Feb. 21, 2004 (CIP, by Jennifer Hunting) - Healthy communities are created by visions and actions of involved citizens. One of the most valuable assets of a healthy community is an organization that promotes sustainable practices and creates environmental stewards. Field campuses have become increasingly popular in their ability to provide hands-on learning and exemplify the connection between community development and the natural world. The Catamount Institute, located in Woodland Park, CO., is an organization that has succeeded in promoting environmental awareness and stewardship among students, teachers, and corporate organizations. EcoVillage) - Opening new doors....OUR ECOVILLAGE will be completing the construction of the first Canadian Natural Building/Climate Change Demonstration Building, to be monitored for 10 years by regulatory authorities, and has plans to open the doors for use this fall 2004.
