Baja Cob Project
WEBSITE Reference, Apr. 7, 2004 (Cobworks) - Join the Cobworks crew in the Baja this winter as we stomp cob on a beautiful ranch in San Bartolo. (Approximately 1 hour south of La Paz near the Sea of Cortez.) Our project is to build a small house for a mexican family. You will learn all of the basics of cob construction: foundations, adapting local materials, installing doors and windows and adding sculptural elements and niches. Our host family will also teach us how to construct a traditional "Palapa roof" (layered palm leaves over bamboo poles). We will camp on the ranch and enjoy mexican meals prepared by our hosts. This course is offered for the month of February, 2004. You are welcome to join us for two, three or four weeks. Plan on having enough free time to go snorkeling, soak up the sun at nearby beaches, and to make an excusion or two down to the canyons and hot springs. This will be a wonderful opportunity to learn about natural building in a community setting, work on your spanish and explore the "magnificent penninsula." Check out the photos from this project.

Turning the Corporation Around
VICTORIA, BC, Apr. 2004 (EcoNews - http://www.earthfuture.com/econews/ ) - On March 25th 2004, (The Paper Campaign - a US coalition of dozens of citizens groups)
ended, following Office Depot's announcement that it will phase out all paper products from rare and vulnerable forests, forests containing exceptional biodiversity values, forests subject to unsustainable management, and forests that have been illegally logged. This includes the forests of British Columbia, of Canada's Boreal forest, and of the south-east USA. Office Depot also agreed to achieve an average 30% post-consumer recycled content in all its paper products. Canada's Boreal forest, which is being destroyed to make paper products, is the breeding ground for 30% of North America's songbirds, and species including caribou, wolves and bears. The success of the campaign comes 16 months after Staples adopted similar policies. It shows that with persistence, excellent organizing, and the combined use of different tactics, the big corporations can be turned around. See http://www.thepapercampaign.com .
