Canada's Mosquito Capital Seeks More Dragonflies
YELLOWKNIFE, YK, June 30, 2005 (The Epoch Times ref. from Ecology North) - Canadian city, besieged by voracious mosquitoes each summer, is trying to boost its dragonfly ranks amid hopes the larger flying insect will eat up the smaller blood-sucking pest. Winnipeg, a small Prairie city, is using less chemicals and targeting mosquitoes with a bacteria that kills their larvae but does not harm young dragonflies, entomologist Taz Stuart said Wednesday. "We’re rebalancing that ecosystem again,’’ Stuart said. "We're seeing a lot more dragonflies," he said, adding two years of heavy rains have also helped bolster numbers. Stuart has stocked five local ponds with dragonfly nymphs and will study what impact they have on mosquito larvae counts through the summer. He stocked another five ponds with minnows, which so far have eaten all the mosquito eggs they could find. http://english.epochtimes.com/news/5-6-30/29942.html.

Canada’s MBA Programs Rated for a Sustainable Future
VICTORIA, BC, June, 2005 (EcoNews, Article, UVIC’s MBA Scores 0%) -There is a good argument to be made that our entire ability to turn the world away from its current path of ecological destruction hinges on the ability of our business leaders to make a "mid-course correction", and to make sustainability their guiding mission instead of being fixated on the narrow, ecocidal goal of share value maximization, at any cost. We can push, and encourage, but if they fail, we all go down… So what are Canada's MBA business programs doing to educate their students about sustainability and corporate social responsibility? Corporate Knights is a Canadian Magazine for Responsible Business, and every year, they do a survey of Canada's business schools as "a guide for students who want to change the world", based on the US "Beyond Grey Pinstripes" evaluation. Buying Homes Of Tomorrow Now Saves Money, Energy
WEB Reference, June 22, 2005 (Science Daily ref. from Ecology North) - While energy prices rise, buyers of new homes continually ignore a simple way to cut energy costs close to 50 per cent -- requesting their home be built to be energy efficient with technology already available, says University of Toronto research…. In a paper presented this month at the 33rd Annual General Conference of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering, Pressnail and colleagues compared the cost of building a model home to the minimum standards of the Ontario Building Code and associated energy costs to the energy saving of building an R2000 home, an energy efficient standard developed by Natural Resources Canada. They found that the cost of upgrading a $160,000 home to the R2000 standard was $5,560--an increase of just 3.5 per cent. The upgrade translated into energy savings of $818 a year. If a homeowner paid for R2000 upgrades by increasing mortgage payments, she could generate $423 a year in annual cash flow on energy savings. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/06/050621094734.htm.

We do not have to keep contaminating our precious, beautiful earth with radioactivity that will remain dangerous for hundreds of thousands of years. A safe energy future is possible and each of us can play a role in making it happen. http://www.newconversations.net/nonukes/safenrgy.htm.

Province of New Brunswick aims for 33% Renewable Energy by 2016
ELIST, June 22, 2005 (From the Globe & Mail, via Ecology North) - Fredericton — The New Brunswick government says that one-third of the electricity consumed in the province will have to come from renewable sources by 2016. That is a 10-per-cent increase from the current supply of energy from green sources. Energy Minister Bruce Fitch expects most of the new power generation to come from wind, with biomass and small hydroelectric facilities playing a lesser role. He said Wednesday that it could result in $800-million of investment in the private sector. David Coon of the New Brunswick Conservation Council says there is no reason NB Power could not buy more than 33 per cent from renewable sources. Liberal energy critic Roly MacIntyre called it a step in the right direction but said that the government is going too slowly. Please search G & M archives if you need more info.
