E-bike Mania Hits Vancouver
VANCOUVER, BC, Oct. 17, 2005 (24 Hours) - Electric bike enthusiasts showcased their prized possessions to the public at Vancouver's Kingsgate Mall over the weekend to educate them about a better alternative to getting around by car. Natural Building in the World Today
ELIST. Oct. 24, 2005 (Left Coast News) - Presentation with Sarah Brooks: Highlighting current patterns of disempowerment in the built environment, and how grassroots actions such as natural building fit into the larger movement of sustainable development. This is a presentation that focuses on how small actions of the mundane, such as construction, have and continue to affect great change and empowerment in the human community, as we reach for a more sustainable, just world. Sarah Brooks has been working as a crew member, site supervisor, and natural building instructor since 1998. She has worked in Canada, the south-eastern Caribbean, Argentina, Brazil and the United States. Sarah has been involved in the training and development of a local earthen building team in Patagonia, an urban permaculture center in Salvador do Bahia, Brazil, and was part of the team that created the first permitted load-bearing cob structure in the United States. She has worked with the Landless People's Movement, the Instituto Permacultura y Ecovilas da Pampa, and is currently involved in developing regulatory changes to the building codes in the Chubut region of Patagonia. ELIST, Oct. 30, 2005 (Greenbuilding Listserve, Chris Green post) - The book, Building With Pumice, by Klaus Grasser and Gernot Minke (it's in English) is available as a 64 page pdf file and can be dowloaded here. Grasser is an architect, an Minke is the Director of the Research Laboratory for Experimental Building at Kassel University in Germany. Minke also wrote the manual on Earth as a Building Material. I skimmed over the content and think you all will find this to be a useful book, suitable for everyone from the do-it-yourselfer to professional architect. There will bemuch information of interest to the strawbale builder, as well. Highly recommended. I give it two thumbs up.http://www2.gtz.de/Basin/publications/books/pumice.pdf.
