Wind Brings Power to the People of Rural Alaska
KOTZEBUE, Nov. 14, 2005 (Associated Press / Anchorage Daily News) - Arctic winds blow steady and untrammelled across the flat, hoarfrosted tundra at the tip of this spindly peninsula in northwest Alaska. These conditions are ideal for spinning the tapered white blades of the 13 turbines at Alaska's oldest utility wind farm, a technology more village leaders throughout Alaska are considering as wholesale diesel oil prices rise to $6 a gallon in some of the state's most remote and impoverished communities.

Energy / Local Living Communities

The ENLIVEN Report
WEB Reference, Nov. 21, 2005 (Feasta, the Foundation for the Economics of Sustainability) - The ENLIVEN project was undertaken by a partnership which was headed by Irish Rural Link, with Feasta as one of the contributors. The project takes two small neighbouring communities in rural Ireland, chosen only because largish housing and other construction projects were being planned, and assesses their renewable energy potential. It then looks at how that potential can be realised in ways that would benefit everyone living in the communities at present and those who might move there in the future. The project's report is now available for download here. http://www.feasta.org/documents/landhousing/enliven.htm.

Implementing Sustainability – Sustainable Livelihoods
WEB Reference, Nov. 2005 (Stockholm Environment Institute) – Spatial Tools - Participatory Geographic Information Systems - a tool for assessing livelihood options - The following websites provide examples of how GIS has been used to increase participation in decision making. Their relevance to sustainable livelihoods is in the way that technology (GIS software, internet) is applied to improve conditions for local inhabitants; to include local knowledge about environmental phenomena within the decision making process; and to provide access to information supporting sustainable development not available elsewhere. There is however a clear recognition of how such technology is implemented as well as the practicalities involved in establishing a GIS facility. http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/sei/sustainability/livelihoods/tool3.html.
