Our Shifting Focus / Leadership / Empowerment

Networking for Transformational Change
State of the Possible Retreats - In 1999, we launched a series of retreats entitled “The State of the Possible.” (www.futurenet.org/retreats/index.htm). Held twice a year, these invitational gatherings bring together extraordinary social change leaders to explore the possibilities for transformational change. Participants find the retreats an important opportunity to examine the historic potentials of our time, for spiritual renewal, and for trust building. Read more...

EcoDesign Resource Society
NANAIMO, BC, Nov. 2003 (NICN) - The EcoDesign Resource Society (EDRS) (www.vcn.bc.ca/edrs/) is a non-profit Vancouver-based phenomenon which, in its own words, “promotes environmentally responsible ('green') design, planning and development practices through research, education and communication.” The key to appreciating what EDRS really does, though, is in the ‘R’ of EDRS—it is an amazing, web-based resource of research, data, and invaluable resource links, targeting professionals (rather than politicians) who want their decision-making to be guided by principles of sustainability. Global Village Overview

Canada - Home of the World's Largest IDA Project
VANCOUVER, BC, October 27, 2003 (Village Vibes) - Several other IDA projects have since followed, including the world's largest asset-building demonstration project of IDAs for learning -- a project that began in 2000 right here in Canada. Social and Enterprise Development Innovations (SEDI) is a national charitable organization dedicated to assisting people struggling economically - people such as the working poor, youth at-risk, the jobless, and single mothers. Dr. Sherraden's work is the basis of SEDI's LearnSave project, which is infused with $32 million from Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC). RBC Royal Bank, the Assiniboine Credit Union and Caisse d'economie Desjardins are the financial institution partners. http://www.charityvillage.com/cv/archive/acov/acov03/acov0335.html

Our Shifting Focus

IDAs - A New Concept
VANCOUVER, BC, October 27, 2003 (Village Vibes) - The IDA concept was first proposed in the early 1990s in the United States by Dr. Michael Sherraden, professor of Social Development and director of the Center for Social Development (CSD) at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He advocated that by building assets, people develop a different way of looking at their future. In 1997, the IDA concept was tested for the very first time in North America through a partnership between CSD and the Corporation for Enterprise Development. The American Dream Demonstration Project offered approximately 2,500 IDA accounts to allow low income Americans in 14 different projects to save for education, micro-enterprise capitalization, training, and home ownership. The research phase of the project is just now finishing. http://www.charityvillage.com/cv/archive/acov/acov03/acov0335.html
