Globalizing Embedded Liberalism: Some Lessons for the WTO's 'Development' Round from the New International Economic Order (NIEO)
SUSSEX, UK – November 27, 2003 (ELDIS) – Research Paper - Author(s): Sneyd, A., Produced by: Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies (2003) - Over the past four decades, efforts have been made at the United Nations to overcome the asymmetrical structure of world trade and distribute the benefits from participation in the trading system more equally. This paper focuses on how the non-aligned movement and the group of 77 developing countries have acted upon their declaration of a New International Economic Order (NIEO), in particular its recommendations for world trade, and asks whether there are lessons that all parties concerned with the fate of the Doha round can learn from revisiting this initiative.
