Student Solar Array Project – Mechanical Engineering
SEATTLE, WA, Jan. 20, 2004 (UW Alliance) - The CPDT’s student member, Nathan Miller, and his team of University students are finalizing their design of a solar array sunshade system to be installed above the 3rd and 4th floor windows of the Mechanical Engineering Building. The project was presented to and approved by the Design Review Board on September 11th. CPDT Team Leader, Dave Fields, and the students also met with Bruce Adee, Interim Chair for Mechanical Engineering and Michael Carette, Assistant to the Dean (Facilities) and obtained their approval. After a recent site visit and meeting with Seattle City Light, consideration is now being given to place a few of the solar panels atop the roof. By installing a fixed window awning design and an adjustable rooftop design, an opportunity may be provided for accumulating comparative data regarding efficiency and benefits, e.g., reduction of solar gain within offices fitted with the awning design. The project will also include the creation of a website that will provide real time data associated with the project and other information that may be accessed by students and other interested parties. Commencement of fabrication and installation which is planned for March.

India Set to Unveil World's Greenest Building
KONDHWA, PUNE, INDIA, Jan. 2004 (Smart Communities Network News) - A business center in Hyderabad, India will earn the distinction of world's greenest building when it opens in January, according to an article carried by InfoChange. The 20,000 square foot building, which draws on traditional Indian circular courtyard design, has set a precedent by meeting 57 of the 62 criteria established the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. That prompted the USGBC to establish a new category to note the achievement: Version 2 Platinum rating. "We have hundreds of years of legacy in such construction, which we have all but forgotten," said the architect Karan Grover. "We decided to revive all our traditional

Mindful Conservatism: Re-thinking the Ideological and Educational Basis of an Ecologically Sustainable Future
PORTLAND, OR, Jan. 7, 2004 (EFSWN) -
Mindful Conservatism
, by C.A. Bowers, from Rowman & Littlefield, examines how the misuse of our political vocabulary contributes to governmental, corporate, and educational policies that degrade the Earth's natural systems, and suggests ways to overcome this linguistic confusion to help recognize the fundamental connections between communities, sustainability, and the conservation of the world's diverse cultures. “By calling attention to the role of language in perpetuating current models of thought--Bowers gives us critical and constructive tools for rethinking the relationships between economics, the environment, and morality.”—Sandra Lubarsky, Northern Arizona University
