Engaged Living
WEBSITE Reference (New Road Map Foundation, article by Vicki Robins) - Something is moving across America. In a myriad of ways, Americans are opting for quality of life over quantity of stuff. Millions are swimming upstream against the consumer culture. This "quality over quantity" ethic is showing up in the food people buy, the way they educate their children, how they manage their finances, their deep engagement with religious and spiritual values, the depth of their friendships, their unwillingness to be hurried and harried, what they want from politics and public life and the mindfulness they bring to dying. In short, we want a life, not just a job and all the trimmings. Read more.

Global MindChange Conference, March 12 - 14
VANCOUVER, BC, Feb. 19, 2004 (CIP, by Melissa Chungfat) - David Suzuki is correct in predicting that Western societies will be moving towards an anti-economic era. By continuing to operate businesses using unsustainable methods for our Earth's finite resources, we consciously put the planet and our very lives in jeopardy and so we look for ways to change. Corporations have the power to inspire this new course, not only for the sake of social and environmental well being, but for the sake of the preservation of future generations on a sustainable planet. Appropriating the Internet for Social Change
VANCOUVER, BC, Feb. 2004 (eCatalyst, IMPACS's monthly electronic newsletter) - One of our project partners on the "Changing Funding Practices" project has produced this compelling discussion paper on "Appropriating the Internet for Social Change." In this article, author Mark Surman of the Commons Group argues that civil society organizations are now confronted with an opportunity - to use the Internet and other emerging network technologies to support our quest for global peace and social justice. Access is not - or will not for much longer be - a major communications stumbling block for civil society organizations. The more pressing need is for civil society to learn how to appropriate the technologies that we now have access to, bending and molding them so that they can be used more strategically and politically. Some argue that the Internet, the fourth media, is in fact our last chance as civil society to retain control of an important communications media. See: http://www.commonsgroup.com/ideas/fulltext.shtml?x=303.

Traditional Indigenous Perspectives on Water
DUNCAN, BC, Feb. 10 (Simon Charlie Society) - How can Elders’ teachings be applied today for future generations? - There is a wealth of academic studies about water: ocean studies, hydrology, marine biology, name only a few of the disciplines that study water in various ways. Traditional knowledge about water has existed for millennia. There is growing awareness of the importance of water and laws that determine our relationship with water, and the urgency to deal with the crisis of water pollution. This course will explore the beginning steps to building community capacity to develop water policy that is in harmony with, and honors local indigenous laws about water, in the realms of health, education, law and environmental legislation.
