Report Says Renewable Energy is Key to Public Health
WEBSITE Reference, Feb. 2, 2004 (Smart Communities Network, EREN) - SolarAccess.com reports that New Hampshire health officials and Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), a national public health organization, have released a study that concludes that clean power resources can improve the health of New Hampshire residents, by reducing asthma rates, dangerous mercury pollution and nuclear hazards. The report, A Breath of Fresh Air: How Smarter Energy Choices Can Protect Public Health in New Hampshire, also examines the potential of affordable, clean, and renewable sources of energy, the use of which could reverse fossil fuel-related public health problems, such as increased poisonous mercury exposure and spiking asthma rates. PSR maintains that increasing energy efficiency and conservation while shifting to clean sources of energy like wind, solar, and biomass, would increase jobs while improving public health. http://www.envirohealthaction.org/upload_files/Breath_NH_fnl.pdf.
