The Ecoliteracy Program
GALT, CA, June 16, 2004 (CIP, by Carol Brodie) - The Ecoliteracy Program was developed in Brazil only four years ago, as a co-operative agreement among the Municipal Secretary of Education, the Brazilian Institute for Quality and Productivity, and the Zeri Foundation in Brazil. The Program consists of actions aimed at, and involving, the schools in interaction with their communities. The intention is to utilize schools and universities as an important link in the development of ecological awareness. While Bowers acknowledges that it is a fledgling program, he feels it is built upon some superb principles; for example, interdependence, sustainability, ecological cycles, partnership, and diversity. As such, he says it is a model that holds promise as a method of place-based education. Read more.
