Best Conference Ever
GREAT BARRINGTON, MA, June 30, 2004 (E. F. Schumacher Society) - Dear Friends: Over 300 people attended this past weekend's E. F. Schumacher Society Conference "Local Currencies in the Twenty-First Century: Understanding Money, Building Local Economies, Renewing Community" held at Bard College. Joel Stonington's fine conference report headlines the Utne Reader's website at www.utne.com. Following is the "Conference Overview" from the program booklet. It was prepared for those new to the subject of local currencies in order to provide a map of issues addressed during the weekend. We include it for your information. At the closing Local Food Festival and Concert, Pete Seeger told the audience it was "the best conference I have ever attended." The weekend excitement was high. "A landmark event" many said. We expect new innovation to follow. You can follow the progress at www.localcurrency.org .

Global Village / Community Building

Story from the Field - Sombrilla Refugee Support Society
NEBAJ, GUATEMALA, June, 2004(Sombrilla)- Wow, it is 3:30 AM I have to get up and rush to the bus terminal to catch the 4:00 AM bus to the capital city. The power has been off for the last two days; so I have to use my little flashlight in order to gather my stuff in the dark, get dressed, and adjust the straps for the backpack, and out we go. We hurry along the narrow cobblestone streets of Nebaj, a very beautiful, old town surrounded by the green Cuchumatanes Mountains of northwestern Guatemala. The dogs bark at us as we go by, and the roosters were already crowing. The "chicken bus" was waiting for the last passengers in the vacant lot identified as the bus terminal. http://www.sombrilla.ca/evaluatingthepath.html.
